American Gangster is the gripping story of a black man who went from being a driver to being one of the most powerful and dangerous men in the streets of Harlem. Based on the true story of the life of Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), we follow Frank's rise to the top of the food chain when it came to drug lords and crime bosses. Frank starts running a systematic operation out of Harlem while bringing his family (Common, T.I., Chiwetel Ejiofor) from North Carolina in to help him. Business starts booming.
Enter Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) - a cop from New Jersey who has just been put in charge of a special drug unit, leading an investigation into the rising drug problem in the streets. Frank and Richie are two passionate individuals on a collision course throughout the movie. Frank's situation gets messy when he starts feeling the rival drug lords (Cuba Gooding Jr.), the Mafia (Armand Assante), crooked cops (Josh Brolin), and Richie, all breathing down his neck. How far will Frank go and how long will his reign last?
Denzel Washington(Glory, Training Day) gives us another amazing performance worthy of another Oscar while Russell Crowe(Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind) shines in his role. This is a movie which will make you root for the bad guy until the very end. Director Ridley Scott(Gladiator, Black Hawk Down) brings us a masterpiece which will go down as a classic crime drama with the likes of GodFather and Scarface. The discussion is no longer Corleone or Montana, it's Corleone, Montana or Lucas.

Ohhh denzel
I need to focus. This was a great post. a great review! I never thought of myself as much of a gangster movie fan until I was introduced to the Corleone family (via book). It really captivated me and made me really want to start my own crime ring. Though the movie was a bit lengthy for those who fidget through movies longer than a hour and a half, it entertained throughout and lived up to all the hype. and the cast. Oh man the cast. Oh denzel.
i fell asleep. but i've been known to do this no matter what the quality of the movie is - the parts i was awake for seemed to be pretty great.. never thought of myself as a denzel fan but i loved him in this (again, from what i saw). and i have an obvious love for russel crowe (hello, gladiator?!?)
absolutely amazing movie. kept me entertained (and awake -- unlike some people) the whole time! denzel and russel were great, but i did wish they had more scenes together.
overall great experience!
I can't wait to see this movie!
definitely on my list of movies to see. not a big denzel fan. but i LOVE T.I haha. and gotta love a good gangster movie. nice review madoodle!
American Gangster reminds me yet again what a versatile actor Russell Crowe is… plus Ridley Scott deftly leads us into loving the bad guy and disliking the good guy only to flip that around by the end of the movie... very clever.
